Fourth Day of Lent
O God,
We may have made a commitment to fast during this Lenten season; we may have made a commitment to give up something that we enjoy. If we have made such a commitment, help us to keep it.
But help us to keep it with sound motives and good intent.
Help us to keep it not as a means to show how spiritual we are or how disciplined we are but rather as a means to help us focus on how much we need you. Let our craving for what we have given up remind us of our deepest craving of all—our craving to know you and to love you.
Let our giving up of something be a means by which we give ourselves over to you.
Amen.
